A New Quality institution of Higher Education

Higher education in India is going through a crisis. Many students discover that a fairly decent marks of 75 to 80% is not good enough to get him or her in getting admission to a good college or institution of repute. Many a time the parents are ready to empty their bank accounts to get their son or daughter admitted into an institute that will guarantee him or her a job. Unfortunately their hopes belie soon after their son or daughter gets a degree, but comes empty handed from the college, without getting a job. A large number of qualified students do not get a job in our country. There are some who get a job but they lose it within a year as they lack knowledge, skill and attitude required to be fit for the job.

Barring a handful few, most of the institutions failed to produce students who can deliver in their professional pursuits. In India both public universities and private institutions have failed miserably.

Public universities offer education at a subsidized rate. Their degrees are perfect and officially accepted by government institutions. Naturally, there is a great demand for these courses. But these universities are in no position to absorb huge numbers of young women and men who aspire to take admission there. This demand for higher education outstripping the supply, has given birth to a large number of private institutes which have mushroomed across the country. Though they try to prove the sanctity of their degrees and diploma, but many a time students experience that, no value is attached to these degrees by the organizations they aspire to work for.

The public universities in most of the cases are in a poor state of affairs. There is little teaching at most public universities. The teachers get a good salary. But political and social agenda keeps themselves busy. They are more interested in the number of publication (more often not the quality of research) and individual researches to get promotions. Naturally the teaching suffers, which makes the students spending a fortune on private tuitions. State universities with archaic curriculum, lack of research funding, politicization cannot inspire the students. The feel and sense of being a modern academic institution is also lacking. Spider webs inside the classrooms and passages, broken furniture, empty laboratories, graffiti of political parties on walls and stinking toilets can hardly inspire the new generation of students.

It perhaps makes more sense for students to pay higher tuition fees at private institutions with the expectation that they will actually get to attend lectures on a regular basis and perhaps acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to be meaningfully employed. People who earlier ran family-owned businesses in garments, sweets, whole sale trading and manufacturing Started becoming owners of colleges and B-Schools. They lack vision and want to earn quickly by cutting cost on quality of education. It makes perfect sense for these private institutions to be teaching factories. The faculty members are paid less. Naturally, there is a lack of motivation. These institutions do not expose the students beyond the text book problems.

Teaching in degree colleges and universities lacks practical aspects. The research aspect is thoroughly neglected. As a result, most of the students (even with good marks) turn out unemployable. The colleges promise excellent placement, but most of the students end up without getting a job. Many of the students who get jobs are underemployed and are exploited. Even though industry and academia understand and appreciate the benefits of collaboration, there are not enough good examples of partnerships. Industries visit campuses for recruitment but rarely are they happy with the quality of students. Many a time they do not provide feedback of recruits or suggest remedial actions for better performance. Many of the students cannot complete even one single year in a company where they get recruited.

The Differentiating Factor:

We intend to establish a great institution which would carry out quality research and disseminate knowledge. We aspire to make our outputs to be world class. We would be focussing on creating lifelong learning experiences for our participants. We do not restrict access to our institution to any particular group. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, religion, caste, class, creed, language and any kind of physical challenges. We would like to invite the executives, new entrepreneurs, professionals and fresh college students to be a part of our institution. We would like to create an ecosystem that enables lifelong learning and we help our students and participants in programs to become lifelong learners.

A physical environment that encourages intellectually stimulating interactions

The physical environment encourages interactions among students, participants of training programs and faculty members. It would encourage all of them to learn from one another. It starts from the classroom design to a common space for faculty members, participants in training programs and students as well which would encourage an interaction amongst all. In the coming years we would try to make it a Globally Benchmarked Infrastructure and makeour endeavour to make ourselves at par with the top institutions around the world. IICMR Academy would provide the ideal environment to stimulate interactive learning.

In order to benchmark IICMR Academy with the best academic institutions around the world, our faculty and senior team members have to travel a lot to imbibe the best practices, so that students get the best environment to pursue their dreams. Infrastructure facilities at IICMR provide the right ambience to stimulate interactive learning.

  • Spacious, air-conditioned cozy classrooms provide the most conducive environment for dynamic and focused discussions
  • Wi-fi environment wherein students are connected with wireless laptops to access the world anytime, anywhere. The center is also being connected with unique video conferencing to our sister institutes in Bangladesh.
  • Cutting edge learning tools
  • Cafeteria offering nutritious and wholesome food to ensure a well-balanced diet
  • Recreation Centre to refresh minds during the hectic daily schedule

Empowerment of individuals to deliver spectacular results

The next component is the human environment. Physical environment itself does not make any institute a great one. An enabling human environment, consisting of the faculty, the non-teaching staff, participants and the students is required where each of the group members will feel empowered and willingly take more responsibilities as they take pride in being associated with the institution. The focus of the institution is to develop people with a sense of value.

We give importance to faculty development. Faculty quality will be the cornerstone of our institute.  Ultimately the competent faculty who had developed excellence in the academic system would help others to grow and develop.

Our brand will stand upon the human environment we would develop. We would build a strong intellectual quotient over a period of time. We strive to evoke the emotions of respect, admiration and appreciation among all its stakeholders. We are sure if we can create such a strong human environment, it would create a strong faculty and non-faculty connect.

New people who would join do not even need to be told about the vision or the mission of ours. They can feel the mission and vision in the air. In short we would build an academy of consensus, commitment and ownership.

Our institution would pursue multiple goals in the areas of teaching, research, global linkages and developmental initiatives. It will be characterized by its culture of openness and transparency and it would invest heavily in talent acquisition and management.

At IICMR Academy the core faculty comprises distinguished academicians from the best institutions and leading professionals from the banking and corporate world with rich industry experience. Besides carrying out industry oriented consultancy and applied research, the Faculty have authored numerous books and published research papers.

The students get a different insight into the subjects with the rich industry experience the faculty shares with each of them. They encourage the students to look beyond the books and explore the subject with experiential learning.

IICMR Academy engaged in the development of a strategic plan for continuing faculty growth. It Conducts various Faculty Development Programmes viz., Orientation Programmes, Effectiveness Programmes, Domain Refresher Programmes and Specialised Programmes regularly.

The students to be equipped to get Excellent Placements

We believe in imparting knowledge and skills, which posts the way on placement. This is ensured by a dedicated Grooming Cell at campus that not only guides students on their career plan, but grooms them for success in interviews and group discussions and public speaking techniques.

In this regard Personality Enhancement will a great focus area at IICMR because we believe that the real success in life depends on a person’s confidence and personality

An important part of personality enhancement is grooming of our students to come out with flying colours in interviews and group discussions. It covers key aspects of preparation, dressing for success, winning body language and confidence in speaking extempore.

Enthralling Events, knowledge Festivals, Challenging Competitions will play an important role in the Role of students of IICMR, life it is all about non-stop learning, as much of it outside the classroom, as in it. No wonder, they are so adept at not only organizing Events, Festivals and Competitions, but also winning them.

Displaying great leadership and teamwork skills, Students of IICMR leave a lasting impression wherever they go.

Building linkages with various components of society

We want to create an ecosystem with multiple linkages with the key components of society, like the industry, civil society, opinion leaders or the political system.

At IICMR Academy, a dedicated Counselling Cell guides students in their future career. Right education, industry-oriented curriculum and perfect grooming ensures that IICMR PGDBM students get placed in coveted banks with reasonably gross salary packages.

Encouraging research and innovation

We would focus on innovation and research. If we dream to play a role at the global level and want our faculty to give thought leadership. They have to start thinking about what kind of research they should be doing. They have to contribute to the body of knowledge. We must focus on developing a culture of research.

On the other hand, we must strive to keep ourselves at a safe distance from politicisation of decision-making and from being the victim of the nexus between the political class and bureaucracy.

The faculty needs to be given time to be able to compete for research funding and the highest rewards in the system. We would definitely recognise researches conducted by our faculty, and as a leader, encourage an open system where faculty do not feel threatened by achievements of others within the same institution. The culture of encouraging diverse opinions is also important.

As we are different from many other institutions we cherish our autonomy. That is why we do not prefer to seek any monetary support from the government. We must protect our autonomy with transparency in strategy, application and management. We understand very well that autonomy is always accompanied by accountability.

As an educational trust, we must be able to perform and deliver results and achieve the goals we set for ourselves. We must be accountable for every single paise spent on any of the activities. We look for merit and we do not provide relaxation to the critical processes like admissions, faculty recruitment, promotion, and assessments and evaluation of the teaching learning process.
